I believe that with dedication, commitment and much hard work, we can all achieve our goals no matter how lofty. I am also certain that when working with horses, we have a greater chance of success when we learn to “read” our horses. By “reading”, I mean being mindful and aware of what our horses need at any given time, because just like people, horses have both good days and bad days. When working with your horse, you need to know how, when and how much to ask for. When you start “reading” your horse, you will be on course for a more respectful, safe, successful and enjoyable partnership. “Reading” your horse is a form of communication, and like in all aspects of life, communication is everything! When communicating with horses, I treat them with kindness, softness, calm and patience, yet I am assertive when asking for what I expect. Horses appreciate this calm and clear communication method as it leaves no room for misinterpretations. I am also very sure to ask my horse for things in a way that they will understand. I need to know what I want, and how to effectively ask for it. Part of my role as a trainer is to be a problem-solver, so when you and your horse come and train with me, I will observe you both thoroughly. I will “read” your horse and offer recommendations based on what behaviours your horse is exhibiting. I will start both you and your horse where you are both ready to begin, and I won’t move you or your horse on until you are ready to move forward, thereby increasing your chances of success. I hope you will join me during what I trust will be a most rewarding journey.
